For a few weeks now, some Twilight fans have been watching the numbers creep by, knowing that at any moment The Twilight Saga: Eclipse would surpass the domestic sales gross achieved by The Twilight Saga: New Moon.
Today, it has happened.
According to Box Office Mojo, Eclipse has overtaken New Moon in domestic sales by a few thousand dollars (Eclipse has $296,649,934, while New Moon brought in $296,623,634).
Eclipse is still not gone from theaters, of course, but this means that it’ll have surpassed both predecessors in domestic gross (Twilight brought in $192,769,854).
The Twilight Saga: New Moon still has the overall, highest worldwide gross of the three ($709,826,790), but Eclipse isn’t very far behind ($653,349,934).
On a side note, Box Office Mojo also notes that of the films released in the past 365 days (which, of course, includes New Moon, Avatar, Inception, Toy Story 3, and other heavy-hitters), Eclipse is the number five top movie.
New Moon still has some of its records intact, including biggest “Opening Day Gross” and “Single Day Gross.” Eclipse has the record for highest “Single Day Wednesday Gross,” and it’s also got the crown for “Widest Release.”
