Last year, The Twilight Saga: New Moon‘s official motion picture soundtrack did not debut at number one on the Billboard Top 200 chart (Michael Buble did), but it quickly made its way there (the very next week) – and on to being certified platinum.
The Twilight Saga: Eclipse‘s official soundtrack, which was released Tuesday, June 8th, is expected to hit number one as well.
According to Reuters, the album’s competition is Christina Aguilera and her brand new album, but “[i]ndustry prognosticators think ‘Eclipse’ will likely debut at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, with possibly as much as 140,000 to 160,000 copies sold by week’s end on June 13.”
They’re basing estimations upon New Moon‘s successful soundtrack release (“115,000 in just three days” and “153,000 . . . in its first full week”).
We’ll find out whether those predictions are correct within the next week or so.
As for whether the album will join New Moon on the platinum list . . . well, it takes one million units sold to get to that point, so do you think Eclipse will hit that number? Why or why not?
The difference between the two albums is that Eclipse was opened for full preview by Twilight fans in advance. An unofficial survey of my Twitter followers as to whether the preview made fans more or less likely to actually purchase the album yielded responses indicating that most fans would’ve bought it anyway, with some saying they were more likely to buy it because of the preview.
